Antiperspirant doesn’t cause Cancer!

In Health & Fitness on March 24, 2011 at 1:35 pm

Unfortunately in this world, many things we enjoy or need to use come with potential health risks. Experts often debate the dangers of certain chemicals used in beauty products, but as consumers (and perhaps beauty junkies) being force-fed loads of conflicting information, it’s hard to decipher fact from fiction. For example, many women have sworn off using antiperspirant altogether (preferring gentle deodorants), claiming it can cause cancer. Well, the smart ladies over at Beauty Brains have done some investigating and found that many of these scary antiperspirant claims are total rubbish. In fact, the American Cancer Society no longer wants these rumors running rampant, and they’re setting the record straight.

These are five statements about antiperspirant. Read them all and then guess which ones are true:

1. Antiperspirants increase our risk of developing breast cancer.
2. Applying antiperspirant immediately after shaving allows chemicals to more easily enter the body from the armpit area and increases the risk of breast cancer.
3. Parabens in antiperspirants cause disease.
4. Antiperspirants prevent people from sweating out cancer-causing toxins out through our lymph nodes, so toxins build up in breast tissue.
5. Men are less likely to get breast cancer since antiperspirant gets caught in their underarm hair and is not absorbed by their skin.

Do It All Day Long…Your Fitness that is

In Health & Fitness on March 18, 2011 at 11:52 am

Ever wonder how many calories you’re burning during the day? Or how many steps you’ve taken? Or how many hours of actual sleep you got the night before? Well now there is a device that will track all of these things for you! The Fitbit is a tiny device (size of a quarter) that accurately tracks your calories burned, steps taken, distance traveled and sleep quality.

The Fitbit contains a 3D motion sensor like the one found in the Nintendo Wii and tracks your motion in three dimensions and converts this into useful information about your daily activities. You can wear the Fitbit on your waist, in your pocket or on undergarments and at night, you can wear the Fitbit clipped a wristband in order to track your sleep.

Also you can track your progress online because the data is wirelessly transferred via a base station. Everytime you walk by the base, the data from your Fitbit is silently uploaded in the background to Love it!

Fitness Fashion Footwear

In Health & Fitness, Shoes on March 2, 2011 at 3:25 pm

Watch out Kim Kardashian, Eva Mendes is on the new fitness fashion ‘it’ girl promoting Reebok’s Easy Tone footwear. With the recent onslaught of celebrities promoting these fitness shoes (Kardashian for Sketchers, Mendes for Reebok), it leads me to believe that there must be some merit to these wonder shoes. Mendes attests to the shoes workout efficacy by saying ““We all walk throughout the day. It’s just a great way to kind of get a workout while you’re doing your basic daily errands….Once you’re wearing them, you do feel your calves working.”

Kardashian states “While I was in New York I found it impossible to find time to work out (it was hard to even find a gym, LOL) so I was looking for ways to stay in shape and Shape-ups have already really impacted my fitness routine for the better.”

Clearly these women are being paid to promote a product so of course their reviews will be glowing…but it makes me think there is something worthwhile about these fitness shoes. I guess the advertising is working. 😉

The Cookie Facial

In Health & Fitness on December 6, 2010 at 10:50 am

Would you rather wait for six months for one of Scott Vincent Borba’s high-definition hybrid diamond peel facials in Los Angeles or eat a cookie that makes your skin glow like a facial? If the answer isn’t clear to you, let me tell you about these ‘facial cookies’.

Scott Vincent Borba has teamed up with DeLuscious, the Los Angeles-based gourmet cookie shop favored by actresses Renée Zellweger and Reese Witherspoon, Borba is infusing small, artisanal batches of select recipes—oatmeal raisin and chocolate with white-chocolate toffee—with skin-, hair-, and nail-healthy vitamins (A, B3, B5, B6, B12, C, E, and zinc), as well as extracts of the antioxidant-rich Brazilian superberry, açai. Because if you’re going to have a cookie, says Borba, “It might as well be good for you.” No guilt—and no wait list—required.

Holla for Hula

In Health & Fitness on December 21, 2009 at 11:50 am

Looking to trim your tummy in the New Year? The kid in you will flip over these hip, colorful hoops. Thanks to some special features, there’s almost no learning curve, so you’ll be dancing and twirling like a pro from the get-go.

BodyHoops are sturdy and durable (not flimsy and featherlight, like cheaper versions), plus they’re lined with a special grip tape that helps keeps the hoops up on your hip so you can twist and twirl longer. The hoops are slightly weighted (1-2 pounds), so teens and adults can even use them as a fun workout tool to get their blood pumping, strengthen their core, and tone all over. BodyHoops come in a variety of sizes and colors (even glittery designs, perfect for girls who love glitz and glam), and they’re made right here in the USA. Who agrees it’s time for a hula hoop revival?!

Shu Swine Flu

In Health & Fitness, Travel on October 22, 2009 at 3:45 pm

With the fear of Swine Flu lurking on every doorknob and escalator railing, the need for sanitizing wipes, sprays, and gels is even more important. Dissolving Travel Toiletries are the next big thing in portable cleanliness.

Each of these Travel Toiletries is a marvel of modern science. Open a pack, remove one of the 50 sheets, and add water. It dissolves into a cleaning product, which you then can use as you are already (hopefully) accustomed. In our experience, 3-4 sheets of shampoo will clean a moderate head of hair. As for the body wash, it will depend on the size of the body you are cleaning, naturally. These are perfect to keep in your desk, your purse, your man bag, your carry-on luggage – everywhere you might encounter unwanted grime. Now if we could only purge that dirty mind of yours . . . .
